Bursa takes its “green” name from the natural beauty of the city that starts from Uludağ and continues all along the region, clean seaside, tiles in mausoleums and beauty which is improved over years but hasn’t changed. This city is celebrated for its silk, every kind of chestnut sweet and appetizing peach. If you ask me “What makes Bursa,Bursa?” I would say leaving all of its beauty and history of the city the sovereign mount: Uludağ. Established in foothills of the mountain, this city hosted Byzantines and Christian world, witnessed foundation of Ottoman Empire and was the capital of the Empire. Furthermore the city still keeps traces of history. For this reason City attracts Muslims’ attention and millions of tourists every year. There are lots of sightseeing places in Bursa. If we start from historical ones: Ulucami (Ulu Mosque) is the first place to be visited. This mosque symbolizes Bursa and charms the visitors with its flamboyance by standing at centre of the city. You will breathe history in this mosque which carries traces of Ottoman Empire establishment period. If you want to get to hearth of Bursa this mosque about which Evliya Çelebi mentioned as Hagia Sophia of Bursa must be your first stop.
Koza Han (Koza Inn) which is near to Ulucami is also indispensable for Bursa. This is a perfect rest-place filled with smells of Turkish coffee, tea, silk and lime. You will be witnessing the photographers taking pictures of the garden combining Ottoman history tissues and aged tree shadows. At that moment colorful, various silks will get your attention and you will find yourself in the Grand Bazaar.
The other mosque in Bursa is Yeşil Camii (Green Mosque). The name comes from the mausoleum right under the mosque. There you will be going to very different period with the tiles and history smelling architecture and see that Ottoman Sultan Mehmet the 1st and his family is sleeping there. You will come across Ottoman Empire’s foundation period in the garden that all of the walls covered with tiles. And also Emir Sultan Mosque which is built at that period and has got sycamore and cypreas trees, graveyard, mausoleum and rising minarets is a rival to Eyüp Sultan Mosque which is in Istanbul.
You should ride up to understand configuration of Bursa. Tahtakale and Tophane are the places to be visited for this reason. After visiting the mausoleum of important Ottoman admirals’ son Timurtaş Pascha you will encounter ruins of Bursa Castle which belongs to Roman Period located over the stairs going to Tahtakale. If you go further you will see mausoleums of Bursa’s conqueror Orhan Bey who is Padishah son of Ottoman Empire’s founder Osman Bey. Right behind of this building you will find a door that will show you all Bursa in one glimpse and the historical clock tower. At that moment you will recognize lovely houses built over Bursa Castle and find the opportunity to visit museums surrounding the castle. If you pass by Setbaşı, don’t forget to stop by Mahfel which is next to historical Irgandı Bridge and drink a tea against the beauty of bridge. Stop by Çekirge vicinity and visit Hacıvat and Karagöz’s, who became mascot of the locality during the construction of Ulucami, grave and see their sculptures. Bursa is much more different in each season of the year. You can either become cool with the sea or choose Uludağ and meet with nature in the National park or peak of the mountain and breathe the fresh air. Similarly in winter Uludağ will be waiting for the people who love winter sports and ready until middle of the spring.
